How to Give Constructive Feedback

Feedback fails one of two ways: so softened the message is lost, or so blunt it's rejected. The fix is specifics, not tone tricks.

Be specific, not general

"You need to communicate better" gives the person nothing to act on — it's a verdict, not feedback. "In yesterday's review, the recommendation didn't come until the last slide, so the room was unsure what you wanted" is something they can actually change. Specific feedback points at a behaviour in a moment; vague feedback points at the person.

The more precise you are about what happened and its effect, the more useful — and the less personal — the feedback feels.
