A clear no beats a vague maybe

The instinct when we don't want to do something is to soften it into ambiguity — "I'll try", "maybe", "let me see" — hoping to avoid the awkwardness of refusing. But a vague maybe is worse for everyone: the other person waits, plans around a yes that isn't coming, and the eventual no lands later and harder. A clear, early no is a kindness.

Saying no well isn't about being harsh. It's about being honest promptly, so the other person can adjust while it still helps them.
