What they're actually asking
“Tell me about yourself” sounds open-ended, so people treat it as an autobiography and start at university. The interviewer isn't asking for your life story. They're asking a narrower question: why are you a strong fit for this role, in your own framing?
Answer the question they're really asking. That means being selective — pulling the threads of your background that lead to this job — not comprehensive. A tight, relevant answer signals that you understand what matters and can prioritize, which is itself part of what they're assessing.
